Germany's Kreator, thrash metal veterans who rival Slayer in longevity and respect within the genre, played to a packed house of two generations of metal heads this Tuesday. These guys are old, their first album out in '85, so it was either the case they'd slowed down, or had been assulting their flying Vs for so long they'd never lose the machine-gun picking required for thrash. The later was true. Chugging through past classic albums like Extreme Aggression and Coma of Souls (my fav) and their latest Hordes of Chaos, their musicianship was second nature. That meant more time for crowd pleasing poses and stage banter, as you can see from my pics.
Frontman Mille Petrozza bashed religion - similar to a recent Carcass show I saw in which Jeff Walker dissed Jews and Muslims and Christians, it's important for metallers to reiterate their non-beliefs, not so much satanic worship, as the general public may think, unless they are black metal - and proceeded with "Enemy of God".
Mille mentioned a reporter recently asked him if he really means it when telling people to kill each other in the music, to which he replied no, its all in good fun.
"Well, I lied," he told the crowd.
"I want you all to kill each other," he said (or something like that, hehe.)
And we did.
The crowd was in great shape for a weeknight, in half-moshpit, half-circle pit mode, and I had my elbows out in full force.
