The women of hip hop (karaoke)

I used check in with a forum and project called the women of techno which, though now defunct, was evidence of yet another genre of music rediculously dominated by men. Don't even get me started on metal.

Same goes for hip hop, especially emceeing.

This is why I got super excited to see so many confident women at the monthly Hip Hop Kareoke night at Revival. I'd missed it on several planned occasions when it was held at the Boat in Kensington, but heard it had gotten pretty hyped since the last session at Revival, courtesy of a guest appearance from Canadian rap godfather Maestro Fresh West.
Anyways, a night of pretty impressive amateurs it was. Including classic Nas and Tribe (to my dismay not much dark stuff.. I was thinkin Mob Deep), even a performance of an Ol' Dirty Bastard track by a pudgey little white dude whose voice sounded more apt for a Necro cover.

The people who get up to perform pretty much know all the lyrics already (save for later-in-the-night drunkies who got up there and couldnt read their lyric sheets fast enough), and generally are fearless in the face of over a hundred hip hop junkies, so if you plan on heading out next month, get your practice on.
Judging from the mixed bag crowd of bboys, preps, hipsters, and every race you could imagine, my friend's friend commented he didn't think anything like this occurred outside Toronto. I said I bet it started in New York, like anything the slightest bit cool Toronto 'thinks up'.
Sure enough it did, if you believe this video.
