Gojira @ Mod Club

France's Gojira (Japanese for Godzilla) ripped up the usual house-music-mecca that is Mod Club and I can say this was point blank the best metal show I've ever experienced.

It was clear from their technical perfection, not to mention our sober interview before the show, these boys weren't sloshed on red wine as one might expect from dudes who are both French and metal.

Very serious about their shit (Beatles t-shirt aside), yet their sweaty intensity seems to rile up even the drunkest Friday night crowd.

Refreshing: Their mix of complex time signatures, death metal vocals and groove oriented chunky riffs is almost 'danceable', not to mention bangover-inducing.

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society pamphlets at merch booth: Many of their lyrical themes explore death and existence but also come from a place of anger over the destruction of the environment. Their spirituality and at-one-ness with nature means they are comfortable in their own skin - way hotter than the 'confidence' mask, i.e. machismo attitude, still repping the metal scene today.
